NAB 2008: Harris and LG Electronics Show MPH-enabled cell phones at Sunday night press event
MPH enables users to watch DTV on handhelds and in car devices
By John Virata
In an effort to push along mobile media and broadcast, Harris Corp. and consumer electronics manufacturer LG Electronics announced that the two companies three year effort to bring mobile DTV to consumer devices is ready to be deployed.
Dubbed MPH, or Mobile Pedestrian Handheld, the solution uses Harris' broadcast hardware and couples it with LG's consumer electronics devices, such as mobile phones and other devices to give users the capability to watch live TV on the go. At Harris' Sunday evening press conference, LG and Harris Corp. executives were showcasing live MPH-encoded content on an LG handheld being streamed from Las Vegas station KVCW-DT's transmitter. MPH will enable users to watch their favorite shows from their local broadcasters when traveling in vehicles with a Kenwood MPH-compliant receiver, or via handheld video devices, such as those offered by LG Electronics.

Both companies are betting that IP-based, specifically Real Time Transport Protocol and Real Time transport Control Protocol over IP as well as non-realtime File Delivery over Unidirectional Transport (FLUTE) over IP will be an important component of getting mobile DTV to consumers. In addition to your favorite TV and news shows, you will also be able to enjoy electronic service guides, banner advertising, datacasting, and interactive experiences via MPH receivers.
